In 1999 Erik Smith was a long time computer addict. He spent the majority of his free time on the internet. He has been a Nine Inch Nails fan for a long time. Thus Nine Inch Nails would come up in his conversations regularly. More and more frequently he was meeting people who hadn't heard them before. Through the course of describing what Nine Inch Nails sounds like to him he began using the term "Symphony of Noise" regularly.
During that same year Erik started learning how to use Photoshop. His first series of attempts at art were playing with the Nine Inch Nails logo and images. He made some imagery he thought was cool. He decided to make a NIN fan site and use imagery he created or altered.
As Erik learned more and more about Photoshop he started creating art that wasn't based around Nine Inch Nails. Since he had a fan site that had a few viewers mostly comprised of his friends, he decided to make a section for his art.
In early 2000 Erik Smith started moving his love for music onto the computer. Before this time he had only tinkered with pianos, organs, guitars and a few similar wind instruments. After he created several bits of sound and a couple tracks he started trying to think of a name. The name was already right there. The great fondness for the name Symphony of Noise.
Erik had been writing poetry for years. A lot of it had consistent themes. Some were different themes running parallel to a central idea. Some had numerous different poems running down the same path. Several batches that easily grouped together into what could be made into albums. The favorite of which started the idea for the river of piss series. All of the poetry was also segmenting itself into different periods of my life.
So along with the Music and Graphics, now textual writing was included. Symphony of Noise was evolving far beyond the NIN fan site it started as. As time rushed on it seemed like more and more was slowly added to it. This includes Web Design as was first introduced when Erik was asked to do the Pink Poodle Steakhouse web site for a friend of a friend.
The more people who viewed symphonyofnoise.com, the more people who were confused as to what Symphony of Noise is. This presented a unique and surprisingly unanticipated problem. What is Symphony of Noise?
Erik knew what Symphony of Noise was meant to be. Erik knew what Symphony of Noise evolved into. The problem was explaining that to visitors. A problem that spawned numerous attempts. These attempts included grouping all non music items into one link on the menu called Productions, separating some aspects entirely and making a version of the web site which had a splash page pointing to three completely different areas. The latter of which never seeing a public launch.
This latest attempt at solidifying yet separating is as follows. Have Symphony of Noise as a band exclusively on symphonyofnoise.com The only thing linking it to the production side of things is a tag on the bottom stating Created by Symphony of Noise Productions. The tag then linked to symphonyofnoise.net.
The hope is that when people visit Symphony of Noise, they only see the band side of things. And conversely when they visit Symphony of Noise Productions they see the mass of other projects as just that - projects. Not a visit expected to be a band site where the music is only a small portion -- thus creating the confusion.
From the creation of what became the first album "Looking Down Into the Valley of Thorns," Erik Smith has been trying to include people in the creative process. There were also people included in the creation of various other projects including web, photographic and writing. As Symphony of Noise and projects under Symphony of Noise Productions mature, more and more people are becoming actively involved.
